History
The idea behind SolaGrain first developed over 25 years ago when John F. Casey, working together with an Israeli endocrinologist, recognized the positive effect that soy had in treating diabetes. As a senior exectutive at Central Soya, one of the world's largest soy processors at that time, John Casey supported the endocrinologist in helping children with diabetes regulate their A1C (long-term blood sugar level). During their research, they discovered that those children who were given sufficient amounts of ground soybeans not only improved their A1C, but also lost weight.
Then John Casey began working with Prof. Hans Fisher, Ph.D., former Head of the Nutritional Science Department at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, to create an improved formula for treating obesity and diabetes.
Since they knew that many previous attempts in this area had failed because the initiatives were too complicated for people to integrate into their daily lives, the two partners set out to create a nutritional supplement that would enable consumers to moderate, steady improvements, while maintaining their accustomed eating habits.
Dr. Fisher's research centered on the key role certain fibers play in reducing cholesterol and regulating the body's glycemic response, confirming studies conducted by the renowned endocrinologist Prof. James W. Anderson. The greatest challenge was to develop a formula that would be highly soluble, palatable and without negative side effects, despite its fiber content - something even leading pharmaceutical companies had not yet achieved. By 2004 Dr. Fisher and his team had developed a unique formula, with the desired nutritional properties, health benefits and product functionality.
The following year the formula was tested in two informal studies of 24 subjects at Rutgers University and 60 subjects at a physiotherapy center in New York, with highly positive results.
In 2007 the product was tested using 27 subjects in 5 diabetes treatment clinics. Based on the overwhelmingly positive results of this diabetes study, Johansons, LLC was formed to begin marketing SolaGrain as an innovative ingredient for forward-looking food manufacturers.
A source of high-quality plant-based protein
The plant-based protein in SolaGrain comes from soya and linseed. It has a high biological value and contains valuable secondary nutrients such as isoflavones.
SolaGrain can help people with diabetes
A 2008 study showed that SolaGrain has health-enhancing properties that can benefit people with diabetes.
